Police ID drivers killed in head-on crash on I-96

The two drivers killed in a head-on crash at approximately 1:34 a.m. Sunday, March 3, 2019, on I-96 near Pleasant Valley Road in Brighton Township have been identified.

According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Chet Lamar Gardner, 43, of Farmington Hills, was driving a 2018 Ford F-150 eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-96 when he struck head on the 2010 Dodge Journey operated by Patricia Mellisa Pond, 30, of Haslett. Both drivers were pronounced deceased at the scene by Livingston County EMS.

Pond was wearing her seatbelt, while Gardner was not. Speed, alcohol and drug use remain under investigation by the Livingston County Major Crash Team.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by personnel from the Brighton Area Fire Department, Livingston County EMS, Green Oak Township Police, and Hamburg Township Police.
