Man crashes after reporting accelerator malfunction

An 18-year-old Jackson man heading east on I-96 at about 8:13 p.m. Friday, May 21, called 9-1-1, telling Central Dispatch that the accelerator on his 2014 Chrysler Town and County van had malfunctioned. Shortly after that call, the driver left I-96 east of Fowlerville Road in Handy Township and struck a tree on the south side of the roadway, according to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire personnel extricated the driver from the vehicle; he was transported to Sparrow Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The roadway was closed for approximately two-and-half hours during the investigation and cleanup. Alcohol and speed to not appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Livingston County Major Crash Team.

Deputies were assisted on the scene by Fowlerville Fire Department, Howell Area Fire Department, and Livingston County EMS.
