I-96 crash in Handy Township claims one life

A 28-year-old Wayne man was killed at approximately 4:30 a.m. Saturday, May 22, when his car left eastbound I-96 near Wallace Road in Handy Township, struck the guardrail, overturned and re-entered the roadway.

The man was partially ejected from the vehicle, according to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The passenger in the car, a 32-year-old Garden City woman, was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to the release, the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and alcohol use remains under investigation.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, Fowlerville Area Fire Department, and Livingston County EMS; I-96 was closed for approximately three hours during the investigation.
