I-96 crash sends motorcyclist to hospital with serious injuries

A 58-year-old Youngstown, Ohio, man is hospitalized in serious condition following a Thursday, Jan. 4, accident on eastbound I-96 near Spencer Road in Brighton Township.

At approximately 1:16 p.m. Thursday, deputies with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a motorcycle versus motor vehicle injury crash on eastbound I96 near Spencer Road in Brighton Township.

The preliminary investigation determined that a 2004 Yamaha Venture motorcycle operated by the Youngstown, Ohio man was traveling east on I-96 at Spencer Road. Traffic began to slow, and the motorcycle operator was unable to stop; he rear ended a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox being operated by a 67-year-old Okemos man.

The motorcyclist sustained serious leg and head injuries; he was transported in serious condition to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor by Livingston County EMS. The motorcycle operator was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The operator of the Chevrolet Equinox was wearing his seat belt and was not injured.

Speed appears to be contributing factor in the crash. The road remained closed for approximately four hours for the investigation and clean up.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by personnel from Brighton Area Fire Department, MDOT, and Livingston County EMS.
