Howell High School teacher Leah Brinker has been named the 2018 Family and Consumer Science Educators of Michigan  (FCSEM) Teacher of the Year. Brinker was presented with the award at the 2018 FCSEM Conference last month. Additionally, the Howell Public Schools Board of Education honored Brinker at its meeting on Monday, Dec. 10.

As a Family and Consumer Science teacher, Brinker teaches several classes including interior design, hospitality and tourism,  child development, career education, and personal finance.

“Leah is an outstanding educator, and we are so lucky to have her at Howell High School. Being a Family and Consumer Science teacher Leah wears many hats and teaches several courses that prepare students for the world outside of Howell High School,” said Jason Schrock, Howell High School principal. “She serves on many committees within our school including the Highlander College and Career Council and Human Reproductive Health Council. She was also instrumental in helping to plan the LOC Teen Financial Reality Fair.”

“Being the recipient of this award means so much to me. I know that I will always strive to be better today than I was yesterday. I appreciate the acknowledgment of my craft and striving towards excellence every day,” said Brinker.  “When I think of this award I am reminded of the scaffolding around me that has helped me along the way, helped me improve my teaching and helped me better meet the needs of each student. I value the collaboration with others to improve my practice every day. This award reminds me of the roots I have created in Howell and Family and Consumer Science Education.”

Brinker was notified in the spring that she had been nominated for the award. She was required to compile a portfolio that included her resume, teaching philosophy, how she prepares students for the world of work, how she works to promote youth leadership and letters of recommendation.

In addition to her work at Howell High School, Brinker serves on the FCSEM executive board. She is also a member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
