Howell boys meet Athens in KLAA-OAA crossover — with broadcast link

Scheduling is always a challenge in high school sports, whether it’s finding games, or finding good matchups, working around gym availabilities, and so on.

So, to add a little intrigue to the non-conference season, the Kensington Lakes Activities Association and the Oakland Activities Association are playing games against each other this week.

One of those has Howell playing host to Troy Athens in a game that will be brodcast on the Livingston Post starting at 6:50 p.m. Click here for the link.

“I think it’s a pretty cool thing,” Howell coach Nick Simon said. “It’s kind of like a college atmosphere, a showcase situation.”

The visiting Red Hawks are 4-1 after beating Birmingham Seaholm on Tuesday, while Howell is 1-2 after a loss at Okemos last week.

“They’re an interesting matchup for us because they do a lot of the same things we do,” Simon said. “In some ways, it’s like looking in the mirror. They do a little more pressing than we do and things like that. But it’s definitely a battle of similar ideas.”

The novelty of the matchup appeals to Simon, too.

“The kids learn more because it’s not a team they see all the time,” Simon said. “It will be interesting to see who can execute better, and I think it’s going to be a good test.”

Although the Highlanders have gotten off to a slow start, Simon likes the progress he’s seen in his team.

“I think we’re really tough,” he said. “I think we have to fine-tune our offense a little bit, but we’re adding in a bunch of new guys and a lot of guys are in different roles. I think we’re in a good place.’
