Student director loves process of bringing “Hunchback” to life

The Hartland High School Drama Club’s production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” takes the stage at the high school April 20-22 and April 27-29. From now until opening night, we’ll be introducing you to members of the production.

Student director Abigail Ferris describes the Hartland High School Drama Club’s production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” as a labor of love.

“Everyone, from the crews to the choir and the ensemble to the leads, has put their heart and soul into this show,” Ferris said. “I believe this could be the very best show Hartland High School has ever performed.”

It’s also Ferris’ last production at Hartland High School. The senior has been involved with the Hartland High School Drama Club since she joined on a whim as a freshman and fell in love.

“It’s a big family,” Ferris said. “As cheesy as it is, we are. We can all argue and squabble, but at the end of the day we all love and care about each other.”

Ferris took on the job of student director as a sophomore, and has been the props crew head for two years. For this production of Hunchback, she took on a smaller on-stage role so she could take on a larger one backstage, helping with the process of getting the show from script to stage.

“Seeing how people become one with their character fascinates me,” she said. “I love to aid in that process.”

In addition to her parents, Ferris looks up to Scott Usher and Mary Jo Del Vero as important influences in her life.

“They’ve had a huge part in making me the person I am today, Ferris said. “They always push me to be my best. I will always look up to both of them and the work they put into the club.”

Ferris loved watching this production of “Hunchback” develop from the first read through to getting the show ready for the opening curtain.

“Audience members can expect to see a truly amazing labor of love,” Ferris said.
