Rob Roy, Pinckney High School’s drama director, was recently inducted into the Michigan Educational Theatre Association (META) Hall of Fame at the 2019 Michigan State Thespian Festival, held Dec. 13 in downtown Detroit.

Current META Hall of Fame members convene every year to consider eligible candidates and nominate those they feel meet the standards of excellence required of this award. Successful candidates must have a minimum of 15 years experience in theatre education with a track record of success in the classroom, in production, and in service to the Association and Michigan Thespians.

In his presentation speech, META Hall of Fame Administrator Dr. Phil Moss of University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods recognized Roy’s tenure as Pinckney’s director, his ongoing service on the META State Board as a festival Coordinator, and his mentorship work as director of the student state board developing the nation’s next generation of leaders both within his own thespian troupe and across the state. He also noted the high quality of Pinckney’s theatrical productions both at home and as state festival Main Stage presenters, noting that Pinckney’s Thespian Troupe #4619 was also received the Outstanding Troupe award.

Current Hall of Fame member Erik Hart of Warren Consolidated School of the Performing Arts said that “as soon as [Roy’s] name was mentioned, the membership was unanimous in its approval.”

Twenty-six delegates from Pinckney High’s Act2 Theatre Company were on hand to see the award presented by current hall of fame members.

Roy was humbled: “This is an award I never thought I’d be considered for. The people on this stage are giants in our profession, the people I aspire to be.”

In competition at the festival, Act2 students were judged excellent and superior in musical theatre performance, dance, acting, and playwriting, as well as being featured in the all-state showcase at festival closing ceremonies.

“I’m so proud of these kids,” Roy said. “They are the reason I do what I do.”
