St. Joseph Mercy Brighton Cancer Center getting new support services

/

The Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor is expanding its support services through a new collaboration with St. Joseph Mercy Brighton (SJMB) and St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea (SJMC) cancer centers, which provide medical treatment for adults diagnosed with cancer.

CSC provides free psycho-social support programs to all people affected by cancer. These programs include professionally led support groups, nutrition and cooking classes, educational programming, stress management and exercise activities, and social support opportunities. All programs and services are grounded in research and have been shown to have a positive impact on patients’ quality of life. Benefits range from the management of physical side effects such as fatigue to emotional side effects including depression and anxiety.

St. Joseph Mercy Brighton Cancer Center, Livingston County’s only full-service cancer care center, provides patients the latest in cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment, while offering modern radiation therapies with access to clinical trials and support groups. St. Joe’s board certified radiation and medical oncologists offer patients the finest level of care available in the region.

The cancer center at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea provides patients with leading-edge cancer treatments on a 115-acre wooded campus in an intimate and private setting. The cancer center, opened in December 2014, enables local residents to receive a wide range of cancer treatments, from surgery to chemotherapy and radiation, all under one roof and close to home. As part of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, SJMC is one of Michigan’s most advanced cancer providers. Patients have access to the latest technology including Cyberknife®, DaVinci® robotics procedures and National Cancer Institute-sponsored research trials.

In this new affiliation, CSC will be an integral part of the psycho-social support programming offered to the patients and families treated at SJMB and SJMC Cancer Centers from the moment of diagnosis. The newly formed agreement will enable CSC, through the support of SJMB and SJMC, to provide services to people in Livingston and western Washtenaw counties who are affected by cancer, and further the mission of ensuring that all people affected by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.

CSC will provide free services at the SJMB and SJMC Cancer Centers including quarterly educational workshops, weekly yoga classes, and monthly support groups for people affected by cancer. With this expansion, CSC services are now available at the CSC of Greater Ann Arbor, St. Joseph Mercy Canton Cancer Center, St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Cancer Center, and St. Joseph Mercy Brighton Cancer Center.
