Shauna Murphy of Brighton is Livingston County’s new 53rd District Court judge, filling the opening created by the election of Judge L. Suzanne Geddis to the newly created Circuit Court judge position.

After winning the new Circuit Court judgeship — created to handle a higher caseload — Geddis resigned her district court judgeship effective Dec. 15, a move that allowed Gov. Rick Snyder, a Republican, to appoint her successor, instead of incoming Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat.

Murphy, currently an assistant attorney general in the Health Care Fraud Division, has also served as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Oakland County. She graduated from the Michigan State University College of Law in 2003 after receiving her bachelor’s degree in the James Madison College.

“Whether as an assistant attorney general, an assistant county prosecutor, or in private practice, Shauna Murphy has shown a passion for, and commitment to, the rule of law,” Snyder said in a release. “I know she will be an exemplary district court judge.”

Murphy will have to run for a full term on the court in 2020.
