The Hartland Players’ Encore Youth Theater’s production of “Seussical Jr.” takes the stage March 9-10. All this week, we are introducing you to members of the production.

Lucas Somers, a seventh-grader at Highlander Way Middle School in Howell, plays Jojo, a smart child with a wild imagination, in the Hartland Players’ Encore Youth Theater’s production of “Seussical Jr.”

Somers, 13, is the son of Rob and Christina “Bella” Somers, and he has a younger brother and best friend, Dante. He’s involved in swimming, theater, snowboarding, and plays the piano; he enjoys reading, water sports, traveling and movies. He plans to strive to be his very best at whatever it is he’s going to do in the future.

Somers has been with Encore Youth Theater for two years.

“When they announced the ‘Seussical’ was going to be the musical, I was really excited about auditioning,” he said.

Among his favorite roles have been his current one of Jojo from “Seussical Jr.,” Edgar in “Drac’s Back,” and Charlie Brown in “Charlie Brown’s Christmas.” He’s also performed in “Aristocats,” “Shrek Jr. the Musical,” “101 Dalmations,” “Mary Poppins,” “Aladdin Jr.,” and “Willy Wonka Jr.”

Somers has enjoyed seeing “Seussical Jr.” come together: “After weeks of rehearsals and seeing the set take shape, it makes me excited for the show even more.”

His parents inspire Somers to work hard in all they do.

“Every day, they work super hard at what they do,” Somers said. “This inspires me to work even harder.”

Somers is excited for the audience to see this “amazing and fun show where all of Dr. Seuss’ characters come to life.”

“It shows them how much fun theater can be,” he said.
