Pinckney artist’s latest “Angel” masterpiece unveiled Friday

A seven-foot-high oil painting by a Pinckney artist will be unveiled on Friday evening as part of a big art show at Shalom Lutheran Church.

The painting – titled “Peace Angel” – is the latest masterpiece by artist Cindy Mitchell, and it’s the second in her series of angel paintings.

The “Unveiling of the Angel” celebration takes place from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Shalom Lutheran Church, 1740 E. M-36, Pinckney. The actual unveiling is set for 5 p.m. A wine-and-cheese reception for adults will follow, from 6-8 p.m.

Mitchell is the longtime art teacher at Light of the World Academy in Pinckney, and from 4-5 p.m. Friday – just prior to the unveiling – some of her students will have their “peace art” works on display.

“About 20 students will have pieces in the art show,” Mitchell said. “There’s a great variety of pieces that they’ve done – some watercolors, even some pieces done in crayon. There are students as young as first grade that will be part of this. I just told them to paint or draw something that makes them feel peaceful in their heart.”

As for Mitchell’s own peace panting, it’s a labor of love that she’s been working on for the past five months.

“It’s seven feet tall,” she said. “I actually had to stand on a ladder to paint it.”

It’s the second in a series of angel paintings that she’s doing. The first one – titled “Arrival” – is a huge, stunning piece that’s on display at Shalom Lutheran Church.

“Peace Angel” is even bigger and more spectacular.

“I’m just trying to send peace to the world through this painting,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell has been teaching art at Light of the World Academy for more than a decade. She was drawn to teaching because of her own experience as a child who struggled in school because of dyslexia. It wasn’t until she took an art class that a teacher was able to find her true talent.

Mitchell said she wanted to be a teacher to help other children uncover their potential.

“I love being able to mentor the children,” she said. “That’s what I enjoy the most about teaching at LOTWA.”

Following Friday’s unveiling of “Peace Angel,” the painting will go on tour as it’s displayed at other churches in the area.
