516IEkRijqL._SX326_BO1,204,203,200_Veteran outdoor writer/photographer Richard P. Smith from Marquette will be autographing his many popular deer and bear hunting titles during book signings at the Barnes & Noble Store in Village Place in Brighton during three days. The signings will take place 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 16-17, and 1-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20.

Smith has a total of nine deer hunting books and two books about black bears to choose from and he’s also written a guidebook to Animal Tracks & Signs of North America. He’s produced a pair of DVDs, too, one of which is titled Walking With Whitetails and the other is Field Judging Black Bears. Anyone looking for a gift for a deer or bear hunter or any outdoor enthusiast should be able to find something of interest among that selection.

Six of Smith’s deer hunting books are a series titled Great Michigan Deer Tales. Each of the six books has a different collection of short stories about how, where, when and by whom the state’s biggest bucks were bagged. Photos of different monster bucks of the size most hunters dream about are on the cover of each book and a banner across the top right hand corner of the covers identifies which book in the series it is.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of publication of the first book in the series. That first edition of Great Michigan Deer Tales was published in 1994 to commemorate 100 years of licensed deer hunting in the state. Michigan’s first deer licenses were issued in 1895. That book did so well that Smith wrote a new collection of stories about more big bucks every three or four years.

Two more deer hunting books written by Smith that provide valuable advice to hunters are Tracking Wounded Deer and Stand Hunting For Whitetails. The most comprehensive book that Smith has written on the subject is the 4th edition of Deer Hunting. All aspects of deer hunting are covered on this volume’s 448 pages, which is illustrated by almost 300 color photos. The author won an award for this book.

The 2nd edition of Black Bear Hunting is also the most comprehensive book on the subject and is his newest book. This book, which was published last fall, includes 384 pages and over 200 color photos. Smith won the Best Book Award for 2015 for this book from the Michigan Outdoor Writers Association.

If you know someone who wants to learn as much as possible about Michigan bears, Understanding Michigan Black Bear is a good choice. Most of this book’s 256 pages are devoted to what has been learned about bears through research. There’s also a history of bear attacks in the state along with a history of bear hunting. Advice about how to avoid problems from bears when afield hiking, camping, fishing or hunting can also be found in this title.

For those who are not able to make it to the signing, Smith’s books and DVDs will still be available in the stores. Autographed copies can also be ordered from him through his web site: http://www.RichardPSmith.com. His mailing address to send orders is 814 Clark St. Marquette, MI 49855.
