Old Trader Joe’s petition gains new steam

No one is more surprised that a five-year-old petition to get Trader Joe’s to come to Livingston County is still gathering signatures — and getting some recent Facebook sharing — than its creator, Phil Bell.

The former Brighton resident started the petition when he and his family lived in Brighton.

“Having a celiac and a number of allergies, we have found that Trader Joe’s provides a number of quality, organic, gluten-free products,” Bell said. “We always had to travel to Ann Arbor or Novi for TJ’s.”

The petition had about a thousand signatures when Bell and his family moved to North Carolina in the summer of 2015.

When we contacted him about the petition, Bell said he logged in to check it out, and to his surprise, “there were over 3,000 signatures.”

Even though he no longer lives here, Bell said he’d love to send the petition to the CEO of Trader Joe’s when it reaches 5,000 signatures.

“I think it can be done,” he said.

As of this writing, the petition has just over 3,400 signatures.
