New Mexican street food restaurant set to open Sept. 10

Owner Dena Miller of Howell, holding the keys to Street Taco above, is excited about the new restaurant she says is bringing truly authentic Mexican street food to Livingston County.

Street Taco is set to open on Sept. 10 in the former Howell Diner site at 799 S. Latson Road, in the strip mall at the northeast corner of Grand River Avenue and South Latson Road. Miller and her team have been hard at work getting ready for business; they have acquired continuity merchant services and as well as other business solutions. But opening during a pandemic? Miller acknowledges that for most restaurants, this is a tough time to be in business, let alone start new.

“I get asked that a lot,” Miller said. “Street Taco isn’t a sit-down restaurant. We have seating available, but there’s no table service. You come in, order your food, and take it out.”

Restaurants with this type of quick service, Miller said, are actually doing better business now than before the pandemic.

“And this is authentic street food, just like you find in Mexico,” Miller said.

No wonder when you learn that the chef at Street Taco — a longtime friend of Miller’s — is from Mexico City.

Street Taco’s signature dish is a fried quesadilla.

“It’s something I’ve not seen anywhere in Michigan,” Miller said. “Our fried quesadillas are handmade to order, with fresh dough that is stuffed and then deep fried.”

Street Taco’s hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
