March was Reading Month at Michigan International Prep School, a virtual charter school that has a learning lab in Howell! On Thursday, March 26, State Sen. Lana Theis read three books via Google Hangouts to a very excited and engaged group of kindergarten through 5th grade students and families from MIPS.

Students followed along with the books, and had lively discussions with the Senator and with each other (through synchronous video and live chat) about everything from “Green Eggs and Ham” to loose teeth.

Connectedness is vital at a time like this. MIPS elementary school teacher Emily Sauer says, “Uncertainty is something we’ve all felt, especially recently. MIPS strives to provide stability to our students, even with something as simple as story time.”

The technology and learning platforms provided by the school have allowed students to stay working, learning, and growing during these unprecedented times.

MIPS administrator and parent Lucas Peless says, “It was so nice to see my children and other MIPS students connecting with an elected official and each other. I loved how technology brought students across the state together with Senator Theis through a shared love of reading. She really helped everyone connect.”

The elementary students of Michigan International Prep School loved speaking with a leader of their state, expanding their literacy and listening skills, and even discussing their pets.
