Howell baseball ends break with single game

While their peers at other schools are wrapping up spring break, the Howell baseball team spent this week in exotic — Howell, with a side trip to Troy.

The Highlanders will play their fifth game of the break today, a single game against Detroit University Prep, at 4 p.m. today in a game to be broadcast on The Livingston Post, weather permitting.

“I love it,” Brandon Leon said after Wednesday’s doubleheader at Birmingham Brother Rice. “It’s fun for me. And the weather has been good, for Michigan.”

And today’s forecast, for cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper 40s for a high, is certainly better than it was a year ago, when the Highlanders played host to Novi on a raw day that ended in a heavy snow shower.

As for today’s opponent, Howell co-coach Jason Ladd had praise for the Panthers, who play in Division 2.

“They’re a decent program and play good competition,” he said. “We don’t know a ton about them, but they’re going to bring their A game.”

It’s not Florida, to be sure, but for players who spent the winter indoors, playing games is pretty darn good.

“I would love to play baseball over spring break,” Bailey Burton said, given the choice. “I’m happy. We’ll look forward to it.”
