Hamburg Community Soccer Club says township is trying to force it out of existence

Members of the Hamburg Community Soccer Club are planning to pack the Hamburg Township Board meeting tonight, protesting what they say are plans by the township to force the soccer club out of its longtime home at Merrill Field.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. today at the Hamburg Township Hall. The public is invited.

The Hamburg Community Soccer Club (HCSC) has called Merrill Field its home for several decades, and has installed soccer goals at the facility (which are then able to be used by all the groups that use the fields).

HCSC members claim that members of the Hamburg Township Board are now working with Pinckney Community Schools to essentially force the HCSC out of existence by adopting a new park-use policy that will allow exclusive use of Merrill Field by Pinckney’s schools. That would allow Pinckney Community Schools to start a new soccer program that would essentially replace the HCSC.

That move isn’t sitting well with the Hamburg Community Soccer Club’s members, who say they will be out in force at tonight’s meeting.

HCSC members say their program was greatly weakened when the Legacy Center opened in Green Oak Township and a new soccer program was started there, and they feel the Hamburg Township Board’s actions will provide the death blow to the organization.
