Darren McCarty returns to Howell Opera House

Darren McCarty

Darren McCarty is one of the most celebrated enforcers in Detroit Red Wings history. He’s a legend for his fight against Colorado’s Claude Lemieux in “Fight Night at The Joe” in 1997; his role on the “Grind Line” with Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby in 1997-98; and scoring in the opening round of the 2008 playoffs that led to his reaching his fourth Stanley Cup title with the team.

But now McCarty is dropping the gloves for a different reason – to hold a microphone and share his love of comedy, as his Slapstick Comedy Tour continues at the Howell Opera House 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 11.

McCarty calls himself an entertainer and storyteller, rather than a comic — he takes his life experiences and spins them funny-side up — but also sees the tour as a chance to connect with fans all over the state, saying: “You guys, for 15 years or so, came to see me play. You had to travel, even from out of state. Well, now that I’m retired and got things in place, I’ll come to see you.”

The show will also feature an opening act comedian; a question-and-answer segment with McCarty; and a meet ’n’ greet after the show, with the opportunity to take photos.

Doors open at 7:15 p.m., and the show will begin at 8 p.m.. There will be a cash bar, as well as light concessions available for purchase. Admission is $25 per person and available now on the Opera House website,  or by calling the office at (517) 540-0065.
