Charter School League champion UPrep basketball team honored at State Capitol

The boys basketball team from University Preparatory Academy in Detroit was honored at the State Capitol on Wednesday for its stellar season.

UPrep posted a 17-5 record on the season, and one of the biggest highlights came when the Panthers won the Charter School League championship, defeating Old Redford Academy in the championship game, 64-49.

For their achievement in winning the Charter School League championship, the Panthers were invited to Lansing for Charter Day at the Capitol on Wednesday, which attracted more than 600 charter school supporters from around the state.

Hundreds of them packed into the Capitol rotunda and gave a huge cheer when the UPrep team, along with Coach Yusuf Sabree and athletic director Erick Davie, received the legislative tribute signed by State Rep. Rose Mary Robinson.

In the tribute, Rep. Robinson praised UPrep’s students for excelling both academically and athletically, and noted the school’s reputation as one of the best high schools in Detroit.

University Preparatory Academy is authorized by Grand Valley State University.
