Thanks to a grant from the mParks Foundation, Howell Recreation has a GRIT Freedom chair available for use at no charge at its Oceola Community Center, 1661 N. Latson Road.

The GRIT Freedom chair is different from a standard wheelchair, and can be used on all types of terrain, from middy trails to paved streets and on grass. It’s suitable for riders with a wide range of mobility levels; some can use it independently, which others may receive assistance.

The height range for chair users is 4-feet-10-inches to 6-feet-8-inches, and the weight limit is 250 pounds.

The chair is currently available for use 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and each reservation includes a brief tutorial on how to use it. The chair must stay on the Oceola Community Center property’s paved path or grassy area.

If you have any questions or would like to use the GRIT chair outside of the daily times, contact Jan Baca, deputy director, at jbaca@howellrecreation.org or call (517) 546-0693.
