HOWELL — John Young is “excited about joining the Highlander team” after his hiring as Howell High School athletic director on Monday night.
Young, the current athletic director at Westland John Glenn, was hired to replace the departing Dan Hutcheson at Monday’s school board meeting.
Hutcheson, who has been Howell’s athletic director for nearly a decade, will leave for a new position with the Michigan High School Athletic Association at the end of the month.
Young was hired at John Glenn in late 2013 after five years at Ann Arbor Skyline, where he was the school’s first athletic director.
Before that, he played baseball at Michigan and spent a year in the Detroit Tigers farm system. He later spent seven years as an assistant baseball coach at Michigan and 14 years as an assistant at Bradley University and coached at Michigan State before getting into athletic administration.
“John will bring a wealth of knowledge of athletics at both the high school and collegiate levels to our athletics department,” MacGregor said in a statement. “I believe he will continue the great things that are already happening in our athletics department and help elevate athletics at Howell Public Schools to the next level.”
Young, 56, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Michigan.
