Work Skills building honors Rod Jones

Work Skills Corp. (WSC) dedicated its Brighton headquarters in honor of its former CEO Rod Jones. The building is now known as the Rodney C. Jones Building.

“Rod’s commitment to WSC will forever benefit our community and those we serve,” said Tina Jackson, president and CEO of Work Skills. “On behalf of the WSC Board of Trustees and staff we are pleased to honor his leadership and accomplishments over the past 38 years by naming our corporate headquarters after him. Rod’s vision of an organization where all can prosper has been fulfilled and his legacy will continue on. His entrepreneurial spirit and passion for those we serve is evident by the vast array of services and programs available to participants at WSC.”

Jones joined the United States Marine Corps in 1965 and served as a sergeant in Vietnam until he was injured on the battlefield and medically discharged in 1968. Following his service, he graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology; he went on to receive his master’s degree from Wayne State University in vocational rehabilitation. He worked as a vocational rehabilitation supervisor for the State of Michigan and the Detroit Medical Center. In 1978, Rod was asked to serve as the executive director of WSC.

As a retired service-disabled Marine, Jones started a number of service-disabled veteran-owned businesses that support the programs and services of Work Skills Corp.

As CEO, Jones led WSC’s success through strategic positioning, strong financial management, and distinctive products and services. After establishing and growing the company’s quality employment and training services and production operations, Jones recognized an opportunity to take the business to new levels. In 1990, he expanded the company to include staffing services through Action Associates, education through the WSC Academies, home health care through Action Home Health Care, and recently diversified into residential services with the opening of a six-bed home for traumatic brain injured persons. WSC also developed an art program and opened Studio West in Downtown Brighton.

Jones stepped down from his role as CEO in January 2016, after 38 years with the 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization. He currently provides support as an operations advisor.
