Vaupel opposes resolution calling for MSU President Simon to step down

State Rep. Hank Vaupel, R-Handy Township, was one of only 11 members of the Michigan House to vote against a resolution calling for Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon to step down or be fired in the wake of the Larry Nassar scandal.

Rep. Lana Theis, R-Brighton Township, voted in favor of the resolution, which passed, 96-11. Vaupel was one of three Republicans who voted against the resolution. There were eight Democrats who voted against it, and two members were absent.

The State House took the vote on Wednesday afternoon, just hours after Nassar, a former MSU and U.S. Olympic gymnastics doctor, was sentenced to 175 years in prison for sexually assaulting more than 100 girls.

“We have lost confidence in the ability of President Lou Anna K. Simon to lead a transparent investigation, to implement changes that will ensure it never happens again, to protect students, and to lead Michigan State University forward,” the resolution said.
