Up for the challenge? Dash or Crash eyes fourth year at Mt. Brighton May 19 — and you can win two free registrations

Top of the Mountain Dash or Crash — the unique 5K obstacle run at Mt. Brighton — puts runners and adventure-seekers of all levels to the test with a fun but challenging fundraiser presented by Brighton Rotary.

The challenge takes place Saturday, May 19, beginning at 11 a.m. and includes several waves on the 5k course, which makes full use of the ski park and golf course hills, lakes, ponds and mud. And there are plenty of man-made obstacles as well, including a climbing wall, a tire bridge, an almost-vertical rope climb, and the area’s largest slip-and-slide.

The popular — and often wet and muddy — obstacles have been retained and improved from the first three years, says obstacle guru Piet Lindhout. That includes the Log Jog, Net Climb and the Tire Climb. As always, the dash ends with a Snow Gun Slalom down the main hill, with runners doused by water from the Mt. Brighton snow guns.

In all there are 14 obstacles over 5 kilometers, and that doesn’t count two daunting hill climbs. Runners will also negotiate a tire bridge, slog through a swamp run and scale a climbing wall.

There will also be two separate kids’ runs of a mile, which also include a fair share of mud and water, and — as with the main course — a 100-foot slip-and-slide.

The cost for the 5k run is $45. The fee for the kids run is only $15. Register online by May 7 to be guaranteed a T-shirt at topofthemountaindashorcrash.com.

There is ample free parking at the site and there is no entrance fee to the event. Spectators may also ride a chairlift to the top of the hill for a view of about 75 percent of the course. There will also be food, beverage, music and a kids’ zone.

Dakkota Integrated Systems for the fourth straight year is the leading sponsor for the event. St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital is the kids’ run sponsor. In all, Dash or Crash enjoys the support of 31 cash sponsors.

Funds from the event support Brighton Rotary projects including: ramps built by Rotary Raiders to assist low-income home-bound residents in the community; college scholarships for high school students; the Gleaners Food Bank; literacy programs in Livingston County; clean water initiatives in the Andes; building and supplying a school near the Amazon River; and the Rotary International fight to eradicate polio worldwide.
