Thursday’s LibCon highlights comic books, authors, games and more

A mini comic-con, hosted by the Brighton, Howell and Cromaine libraries, is set for 4-8 p.m Thursday, Aug. 3, at 2/42 Church, 526 Grand River Ave., Brighton, 48114.

This free event, open to all ages, will have many venues open, including: professional authors and illustrators; showcasing personal artwork or collection of all things fandom; cosplay contest; fandom-based games and crafts; and vendor booths.

The growth of comics and graphic novels has boomed in the last 10 years, creating comics conventions where nerd/geek culture has gone mainstream. National comic-con events are popular, likened by some to large-scale concerts. Movie studios have jumped on the band wagon, bringing in big-name actors for movies such as “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Dark Knight.” Those attending dress up as their favorite comic book superhero or fantasy character adding to the flair of the event.

This year’s Brighton, Cromaine, and Howell Library LibCon event will focus on local comic book talents and promotion of comics and graphic novels.

“Comics’ playful words and pictures help provide a great learning tool for young readers, from verbal and visual literacy to critical thinking and memory,” said Meryl Jaffe, author of “Raising a Leader.” “Graphic Novels’ short bursts of text and imagery appeal to all ages. For weak language learners and readers, graphic novels’ concise text and images help readers decode and comprehend text, making reading less daunting.”
