Three county students among those Slotkin honors for U.S. service academy appointments

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin held a ceremony and reception Thursday evening at the Michigan State University Union to celebrate seven future cadets and midshipmen from Michigan’s 7th District who have been appointed to U.S. service academies.

Three of the seven students honored are from Livingston County:

Carrigan Eberly

Carrigan Eberly is graduating from Brighton High School and will be attending the U.S. Air Force Academy. Serving in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot has been a goal of Carrigan’s since the sixth grade, and she believes there is no greater calling than to serve and lead in the U.S Military. Throughout her time in high school, Carrigan has excelled in leadership, academics, and athletics. Carrigan is excited to embrace the challenge of Military Academy life, and is ready to write her next chapter with others who also share a similar discipline and drive to push beyond what is expected.

Colin Robertson

Colin Robertson is graduating from Brighton High School and is set to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Throughout his high school experience, Colin has been a part of the schools Executive Board, freshmen Student Council, Video Production class, and Leadership class. Additionally, Colin is an officer for the National Honor Society and he has played at the top level of soccer in the United States for the past 7 years. Colin is excited to take on the Merchant Marine Academy and is confident that it will spark personal growth and development as a young man.

Caleb Schmiedel

Caleb Schmiedel, who is from Pinckney, is currently attending Zama Middle High School at Camp Zama, Japan, where his family is currently based. He will be attending the U.S. Naval Academy. Inspired by his family’s legacy of military service, Caleb is the epitome of leadership, dedication, and academic excellence. Throughout his high school career, Caleb has demonstrated exceptional talent as a star athlete, excelling in both football and baseball and serving as team captain for multiple years. Additionally, he maintains an impressive academic record, boasting an overall GPA of 3.9.

The students were nominated by Slotkin to the academies in her capacity as a U.S. Representative and received their acceptances earlier this year. Each student, their families, and mentors and supporters were invited to the reception, an annual tradition for Slotkin

.

“These outstanding young men and women are going to receive what I believe to be the finest leadership training in the world at the academies. They represent a new generation of leaders, and I urge them to focus on the values of uniting those they lead, and leading with character and purpose,” Slotkin said. “They have the opportunity to chart a new course for our country that rejects divisiveness and upholds the values of equality, dignity and respect for all.”
