Things are changing at what was the Tanger Outlets mall at 1475 N Burkhart Road. All the “Tanger” signs are covered, and if you go to the Tanger Outlets website at https://www.tanger.com, you are automatically redirected to Kensington Valley Outlets at https://kensingtonvalleyoutlets.com/.
The word “Tanger” has been covered on all the signs at the mall.
According to well-placed sources, the mall has been acquired by Lormax Stern, the commercial real estate firm headquartered in Bloomfield Hills that owns dozens of retail centers — most of which are located in Michigan, including the Green Oak Village Place Mall.
In 1996, the Kensington Valley Factory Stores opened in Howell Township. The mall was purchased by Tanger Outlet Centers in 2002, and that change brought with it a new and much longer name: Tanger Outlet Centers at Kensington Valley.
In 2010, just 15 years after opening, the mall became the top tourist destination in Livingston County, drawing over 3.5 million visitors a year, and surpassing Kensington Metropark.
We marked the 20th anniversary of the mall in 2016.
There are no details yet as to what, if any, changes can be expected at the new Kensington Valley Outlets. We will share details as they become available.
The Green Oak Village Place Mall, at 550,000 square feet, is considerably larger than the Kensington Valley Outlet, which is 325,000 square feet in size.
And a fun fact about the Green Oak Village Place Mall: one of the first roundabouts in Michigan was constructed there to handle the increase in traffic from U.S. 23, and ease conditions at Lee Road. (You can watch a video of the roundabouts here.)
The roundabouts were ranked in 2020 as one of the 10 most dangerous intersections in Michigan.
