U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin

Slotkin nabs endorsements of Detroit, Lansing chambers of commerce

The Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce endorsed U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin in the race to represent Michigan’s 7th Congressional district. The Detroit Chamber follows the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce’s endorsement in September. Slotkin has now secured the backing of both major regional chambers in the district.

The chambers endorsed Slotkin over her challenger, state Sen. Tom Barrett, R-Charlotte.

“I’m grateful for the support of both the Detroit and the Lansing regional chambers of commerce and their endorsement of a bipartisan approach to the toughest challenges facing Michigan small businesses,” said Slotkin in a release. “During COVID, I worked hand-in-glove with the chambers to keep Michigan’s small businesses afloat and employees on payrolls.

“In Congress, we’ve passed laws like the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the CHIPS Act that bring investment, jobs, and opportunity back home to benefit Michigan workers and our small businesses. Michigan’s economic future is bright, and I look forward to continuing my strong partnership with the Detroit Chamber, the Lansing Chamber, and Michigan’s small business community to keep our state competitive.”

“Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin has been an unwavering advocate for Michigan businesses for the past four years,” said Brad Williams, vice president of government relations for the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce. “Her support of the automotive industry and small businesses through the COVID-19 pandemic has once again earned her endorsement from the Chamber’s PAC. Additionally, Rep. Slotkin understands the critical role that the defense industry plays to our region and has actively promoted Selfridge’s ability to house the F-35 fighter jet. Rep. Slotkin will continue to represent the best interests of her constituents in D.C., and we look forward to working with her for another term.”

During her time in Congress, Slotkin has fought to defend and expand Michigan’s middle class and believes the future of the manufacturing industry should be in Michigan, not out of state or overseas. She’s made securing American supply chains and rebuilding domestic manufacturing a top priority.

That’s why Slotkin co-chaired the Critical Defense Supply Chains Taskforce with Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and wrote legislation that supports businesses manufacturing those critical goods at home. It’s also why she pushed Democratic leadership to pass the CHIPS Act, a bill that invests more than $50B dollars in the domestic semiconductor industry. Slotkin supports the bipartisan deals that the Michigan legislature struck with auto companies like GM, bringing billions of dollars of investment and thousands of jobs to the state.

Slotkin knows that inflation — and, in particular, increases in the price of gas — can drive up costs for mid-Michigan businesses across the board. She’s tackled the problem head-on by sponsoring legislation that would suspend the federal gas tax and pushing the Biden administration to open up the Strategic National Reserve and negotiate harder with foreign oil producers like Saudi Arabia.
