Slotkin, colleagues push to strengthen security at southern border

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin joined 14 of her colleagues today to send a letter to President Biden urging him to strengthen security at the southern border.

After Congressional Republicans rejected the bipartisan border security agreement negotiated in the Senate, Slotkin and her colleagues urged the President to use all tools at his disposal, including executive action, to better address security at the southern border, intercept the flow of illegal fentanyl, and allow for orderly legal immigration.

“It is well past time for both parties to come together and agree on reasonable, bipartisan immigration reforms that both strengthen enforcement at the border and provide a path to citizenship for those who have been living, working, and paying taxes in the United States for many years,” said Slotkin. “The Senate was working on such a bipartisan deal before former President Trump put a stop to negotiations. In light of the paralysis here on the Hill, it is time that the Administration take action as a last resort.”

Throughout her time in Congress, Slotkin has been regularly engaged on the issue of border security and immigration.

In October, Slotkin cosponsored comprehensive, bipartisan immigration legislation, the Dignity Act, which has the support of 21 Democrats and 8 Republicans and aims to stop illegal immigration, address undocumented immigrants living in the United States, strengthen the American workforce and economy, and strengthen future economic competitiveness.

She also reintroduced a suite of bipartisan legislation aimed at addressing border security and immigration and announced her cosponsorship of two pieces of comprehensive reform legislation.

And earlier this year, Slotkin spoke on the House floor to call for passage of a bipartisan immigration and national security deal negotiated in the Senate.

She also previously introduced the INTEL at Our Borders Act in both the 116th and 117th Congresses and previously introduced the Emergency Migration Response Act and Border Security and Migrant Safety Act in the 117th Congress.

And in her time in Congress, Slotkin has also visited the northern and southern borders to see firsthand the issues with enforcement and processing, and called out the need to alleviate strain on border personnel and infrastructure. She has also publicly admonished both parties for the years of inaction on reforming our border security and immigration systems.
