Slotkin attends signing of Respect for Marriage Act at White House with her late mother’s partner

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Lansing) today joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers, special guests, and her late mother’s partner at a ceremony on the White House lawn as President Joe Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law.

Last week, the historic marriage bill, which will codify protections for same-sex and interracial marriage, passed with bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress after months of negotiation.

Slotkin was accompanied at the landmark celebration by her late mother’s partner.

“Today, we finally enshrined the right to marry whom you love into federal law, a historic achievement – decades in the making – that will protect the marriages of same-sex and interracial couples here in Michigan and across the country,” said Slotkin. “It was also an important personal moment for me, as I was able to attend today’s bill signing ceremony alongside my mom’s longtime partner, Anne.

“My mom came out in suburban Detroit in the 1980s and lived the rest of her life as a gay woman. She passed away before she and Anne could legally marry, but I know how proud she would be of the historic step forward our country has taken today.”
