What’s been dubbed its “reawakening season” began with swashbuckling fun for the historic Howell Opera House as Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance” took to the stage this weekend. The performances played out on the second floor of the Opera House, which hasn’t hosted a production since the building at the corner of Grand River Avenue and Walnut Street in downtown Howell was closed by the fire marshal a hundred years ago.
Friday’s performance — a fundraiser for the Livingston Arts Council — was described as exceeding expectations.
“So well done,” said one audience member. “Gilbert and Sullivan would be proud.”
The Arts Council is hoping to begin restoring the second-floor space after this season concludes.
Remaining performances of “The Pirates of Penzance” are set for 7 p.m. Friday, May 1, and 7 p.m. Saturday, May 2.
