Founded by Kathy Moorehouse in 2002, Light of the World Montessori Preschool is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Light of the World Academy was founded as a preschool and kindergarten, and has grown to become a very successful and highly ranked preschool through eighth-grade school. In 2015, the K-8 school became a public charter school, while the preschool has remained a Christian Montessori program located at Shalom.

Moorehouse stresses the fact that the school is a genuine Montessori school, with all American Montessori Society-trained teachers and aides. Moorehouse has been the school’s director since the beginning, while Sandy Duperron and Chris Barclay have been the head teachers for the past 19 years. All of them are AMS-certified.

Low student-teacher ratios are a hallmark of the program. Light of the World Montessori Preschool has a student-to-teacher ratio of 8-to-1.

Moorehouse said there are numerous benefits to a Montessori education, including the ways in which the program focuses on a student’s key developmental stages, setting them up for success in life. The Montessori program at Light of the World Montessori Preschool educates the whole child socially, emotionally and academically.

“If parents are looking for a Montessori education for their child, it’s important that they know whether the school is a genuine Montessori school,” Moorehouse said. “All of our teachers are fully trained and certified in the Montessori method.”
