The fundraising numbers are in for the 8th Congressional District, and only one of the five Republican candidates has raised any significant amount of money. The Federal Election Commission filing deadline was today.
Five Republicans are in the running to unseat U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Holly, a first-term Congresswoman who flipped the seat by defeating Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Bishop in 2018. The 8th Congressional District is a Republican-leaning district, and most political observers rate the 8th as a toss-up district in 2020.
Given the anemic fundraising numbers by the Republican candidates, though, that may cause some to rethink that rating.
Paul Junge is far and away the fundraising leader among the GOP pack, with $273,418 raised and $234,713 cash on hand.
The other four candidates – Mike Detmer, Alan Hoover, Kristina Lyke and Nikki Snyder – have each raised less than $6,000.
By contrast, the Democratic incumbent, Slotkin, has more than $2.8 million cash on hand.
