Indivisible Livingston called on U.S. Rep. Mike Bishop to return $7,000 his campaign received from the political action committee of The Geo Group, a private prison company that operates immigration detention centers.
According to NPR, in 2017 alone, ICE and the U.S. Marshals Service paid GEO $32 million a year to run detention facilities for thousands of detainees. [NPR, 11/21/2017]
A press release from Indisible Livingston said the Rochester Republican was slow to react to the separation of children from their families, calling his response “a lukewarm comment through his spokesperson that ‘Rep. Bishop believes families seeking asylum should be held together while their cases are being adjudicated.’” [WHMI.com, 6/19/2018]
“The separation of children and toddlers from their parents is immoral and un-American, and we expect more out of our Congressman.” said Gretchen Hertz, leader of Indivisible Livingston. “We call on Mike Bishop to immediately return these contributions and personally and forcibly condemn the brutal confinement of children in cages away from their loved ones. Americans are better than this.”
Indivisible Livingston said it calls on Bishop to return the $7,000, or donate the money to a children’s’ charity.
