Hune endorses Trump in GOP primary

hune_headshotAs Republicans across the nation piled onto GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump for failing to disavow former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke, one notable Livingston County politician has given Trump his endorsement.

State Sen. Joe Hune touted his endorsement on Twitter, which was also announced on the Independents 4 Trump Facebook page:

I am proud to announce after careful consideration that I am supporting Donald Trump For President of the United States of America. Donald J. Trump has the business experience that I think will help make this country great again! He also has the candor that we so desperately need. I appreciate his war with political correctness and the issues that he has brought forward. Donald Trump has forced the Republican Party to talk about illegal immigration and trade deficits, which absolutely must be addressed. Please join me in supporting and voting for Donald Trump for President.

Hune’s endorsement of Trump drew quick — and almost entirely negative — response on Facebook.

Posts to the Livingston County Republican Party’s page featured comments ranging from “shock” to “disappointed” to dismissing it as a bout of “insanity” on Hune’s part.

“Yeah my heart was broken yesterday when I saw this. Boo!” posted Jamie Samples.

Jennifer Hensley wrote, “Say it ain’t so, Joe.”

That Hune’s endorsement comes in the wake of the past weekend’s most recent Trump controversy — his not disavowing David Duke, a former Grand Wizard of the KKK — did not go unnoticed.

“Like I said on Joe’s page, it makes it hard to shake the ‘Klan’ label in Livingston County when our Senator endorses Trump,” wrote Jenni Curtin. “I have always been a Joe fan. Very disappointing.”

Allan Herdman posted that “Joe’s entitled to a few occasional, temporary bouts with insanity – just like the rest of us.”

On The Livingston Post’s Facebook page, where the political leanings are far more mixed than on the Livingston County Republican Party’s page, Mary Jo Del Vero posted, “Are you kidding me? Wow. I can’t believe anyone seriously supports this racist crazy person, let alone a supposedly educated politician.”

However, Rochelle Andros wrote, “Good job Joe!!! Go Trump!!”

There was no mention of Hune’s Trump endorsement on Hune’s Facebook page.

Hune represents Michigan’s 22nd Senate District, which includes all of Livingston County and parts of Washtenaw County.
