In celebration of Juneteenth, First United Methodist Church-Brighton Campus will host an extraordinary afternoon of faith, movement, and community fellowship at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 7. The event brings the celebrated liturgical dance ministry Vessels of Grace from Oak Grove AME Church in Detroit directly to the Brighton community, offering local residents a profound opportunity to experience Black excellence and cultural expression through the sacred arts.
Juneteenth — originating from a joining of the words “June” and “nineteenth” — marks the historic day on June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to deliver the message that all enslaved people were free. Occurring two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, it stands as the monumental moment freedom became real. While recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, the day has always been sacred to Black Americans as an enduring celebration of liberation, remembrance, and communal joy.
The upcoming program connects this rich historical legacy to active expressions of faith. In early African American spiritual traditions, the body has historically served as a vital vehicle of praise; distinct traditions like the ring shout, the holy dance, and the lifting of hands are foundational acts of worship. Vessels of Grace honors this spiritual heritage by bringing Scripture vividly to life using elegant, spirit-filled choreography and joyful expression.
“There is a joy and gracefulness to what Vessels of Grace does that is truly awe-inspiring,” said event organizer Kara Shuell. “When I saw them perform, I was struck by how powerfully they combine artistry and storytelling—the kind of beauty that draws you in. This Juneteenth, come experience that joy and beauty for yourself.”
The collaborative event aims to bridge regional faith communities gathering people across Livingston County to share a meal together with the dancers following the presentation.
“By extending the celebration of freedom from the sanctuary to the dining table, we hope togrow in fellowship and community,” said Suzanne Everett, FUMC Director of Mission and Justice Engagement. Tickets for the catered dinner are available through May 31 at the church office and online at https://www.brightonfumc.org/event/vessels-of-grace-juneteenth/.
