First National Bank offers shutdown assistance to federally employed customers

With the federal government shutdown entering its fourth week, and federal employees going without their first paychecks, a charity that helps with debts is helping First National Bank stands ready to help federal employees who are its customers.

Ron Long

“This is what a community-based financial institution should do,” said Ron Long, president and CEO of First National Bank. “These are our family, friends and neighbors. We owe it to them to try our best to help.”

While Livingston County may not have a significant population of federal government employees, there are individuals, non-profit organizations, and even small businesses with federal contracts that are affected nonetheless.

“It puts a strain on all of them,” Long said.

To that end, First National Bank — the only bank headquartered in Livingston County — said in a release that it will work with affected customers on an individual basis to help them get through the shutdown. Staffers are ready to help identify solutions, which could mean postponing a loan payment without a fee, or helping to refinance a loan from another institution and delaying the first payment due.

Small business solutions can include working through a commercial loan payment plan, receivable financing, or even assistance with what to do with a pending SBA loan during the shutdown.

While the bank may not be able to help in every situation, those affected by the federal government shutdown and experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to reach out as soon as possible to discuss individual arrangements and options.

The earlier each situation can be reviewed, the earlier it may be to identify and implement potential solutions. In addition, First National Bank wants those affected by the shutdown to know their finances are in order until the shutdown is resolved.
