Driver suffers life-threatening injuries in I-96 crash in Handy Township

A 28-year-old Taylor woman is in Sparrow Hospital in Lansing with life-threatening injuries after a rollover crash on eastbound I-96 east of Fowlerville Road in Handy Township.

According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a single-vehicle injury crash at approximately 10:05 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15. The preliminary investigation reveals that the woman was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox on eastbound I-96 when the vehicle drove off the left side of the roadway onto the shoulder. As the vehicle re-entered the roadway, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which crossed both eastbound lanes, continued off the right side of the roadway, hit the ditch and overturned.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle as it overturned. She suffered life threatening injuries and was flown to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing by Survival Flight.

The driver was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.

Both eastbound lanes of travel were closed for approximately two hours during the investigation and clean up. Both alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were assisted on the scene by the Fowlerville Police Department, Michigan State Police, Fowlerville Fire Department, Green Oak Police Department, and Livingston County EMS.
