The Michigan Supreme Court today unanimously rejected a petition from the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson requesting an arbitrary change to the voter-approved constitutional deadlines for submission and approval of new district maps.
The residents of Michigan overwhelming passed Proposal 2 in 2018, which created the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission and provided them clear constitutional deadlines for submitting and approving new maps. Delays in the release of final Census data caused the MICRC to seek relief from the Supreme Court.
“Even after the Commission’s own Democrat attorney acknowledged in interviews that the Commission will have the redistricting data they need to draw maps on time, the Commission and Secretary Benson sought to unilaterally ignore and change our state constitution by seeking to delay their deadlines,” said Meghan Reckling, chair of the Livingston County Republican Party.
“Today’s unanimous ruling is a huge win for the rule of law and the people of Michigan who overwhelming supported Proposal 2 back in 2018.”
