Former President Donald Trump has endorsed Republican Mike Detmer of Howell in his quest to primary state Sen. Lana Theis, R-Brighton, in 2022.

As reported today in the Detroit News, Trump called Michigan lawmakers “cowards” in a statement, and continued to make unsubstantiated claims that there was widespread fraud in the battleground state’s 2020 election.

Theis, one of the legislature’s most conservative members, is vice chair of the Senate Oversight Committee, which announced in a high-profile report that there were no significant acts of fraud in the 2020 election, in which President Joe Biden beat Trump by 3 points.

Trump said in his statement that Theis “forgot” she is a Republican.

Detmer — who announced in October that he intended to primary Theis — is the controversial candidate who ran unsuccessfully in the 2020 GOP primary for the 8th Congressional District; posted a photo of himself with a member of the Proud Boys in the background; and ran unsuccessfully for state rep in 1998, when he lived in the Rochester/Troy area.
