Submit your proposed new county commission district boundaries by Sept. 20

If you think there’s a better way to make sure Livingston County residents are well represented by the community’s 9 county commissioners, here’s your chance to take part in this year’s local redistricting: The Livingston County Apportionment Commission voted unanimously to accept up to two maps from residents.

Playing with the districts is a fun exercise, one with which I’ve spent far too much time this afternoon. Give it a try and you’ll see how challenging (and entertaining) it is to draw fair and equitable districts to ensure we are all well represented.

“This is a first-of-its-kind opportunity for residents of Livingston County to participate in the local redistricting process,” said Meghan Reckling, chair of the Livingston County Republican Party. “I hope that every resident of Livingston County participates in the local redistricting process, whether that be through submitting a map they drew or providing public comments online or in-person during our meetings.”

You are encouraged to use www.davesredistricting.org to draw your map. While there is a step-by-step guide on the site, I highly recommend watching this short video, which gives you all you need to know to get started.

Residents must submit 7 printed copies of their map, along with 7 copies of a general description of the proposed districts to the Livingston County Clerk’s Election Division no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2021. Any plan(s) submitted must meet the legal standards outlined in MCL 46.404.
