The Hartland Township Planning Commission on Thursday approved the site plan submitted by the Cromaine District Library to enhance the space where where it hosts numerous community events, programming, and concerts.

The area, to be known as “Cromaine Commons,” is a major goal of the library’s strategic plan, which includes elevating its outdoor spaces. Cromaine Commons reimagines the library’s south lawn as a vibrant community square, designed to support year ‘round gathering, learning and celebrating.

Cromaine Commons will include a 20×40 open sided pavilion for concerts, programs and events; landscaping with canopy trees, shrubs, and irrigated planting beds; paver patios and sidewalk seating areas for reading, relaxing, and small gatherings; and decorative fencing and site lighting for a safe and welcoming feel.

“This project reflects what we heard loud and clear: our community values connection, enrichment, and shared experiences,” said Library Director Sarah Neidert. “We’re honored to begin this next chapter in the Village of Hartland.”

Built on community feedback

This project follows an extensive input process. In fall 2023, Cromaine partnered with ReThinking Libraries to gather feedback through surveys and stakeholder sessions. Nearly 1,200 community members shared their ideas—clearly expressing a desire for more outdoor, flexible, and family-friendly space.

A place for all seasons and all ages

From concerts under the pavilion to outdoor story times, shaded reading spots, and neighborhood events, the new Cromaine Commons will be a true community cornerstone.

What’s Next

There will be an open bid process for the required work with a target of a summer 2026 completion date. Project updates will be shared at www.cromaine.org and on social media as progress continues.
