North Star Reach, the ninth U.S. residential camp in the SeriousFun Children’s Network founded by actor and philanthropist Paul Newman, welcomes two new board members through the Golub Capital Nonprofit Board Fellows Program at the University of Michigan.
Alexis Markowitz and Jaelynn Jarman were unanimously elected by the North Star Reach oard at its September meeting and will serve a one-year term.
“On behalf of the North Star Reach board members, we are excited to welcome Alexis and Jaelynn to our team,” said Anna Maiuri, board vice chair. “They bring incredible professional expertise and lived experiences that will enrich our governance work. I look forward to mentoring them throughout the year and know their insights will greatly enhance our efforts.”
Jaelynn Jarman is a first-year MBA student and Dean’s Impact Scholar at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. Prior to Ross, she served as Operations and Finance Manager at the DC Public Education Fund, where she built financial and operational systems to support education grant programs for DC Public Schools, managing budgets totaling over $120 million.
A Howard University alumna with a bachelor’s in psychology and a minor in human development, Jarman is passionate about educational equity and community impact. Outside of work, she enjoys long walks with her dog, Bentley, exploring new restaurants and coffee shops, and spending time with loved ones.
“Joining the North Star Reach Board is an incredible opportunity to make a difference for children who deserve a place where they can feel a true sense of belonging,” said Jarman. “I’m excited to use my experiences in finance, operations, and community engagement to contribute to North Star Reach this year.”
Alexis Markowitz is a master’s student at the University of Michigan pursuing a Master of Social Work. She previously taught grades 2-4 for six years in Texas, where she delivered trauma-informed instruction and led STEM and robotics initiatives to expand access for underserved learners. She currently serves as education coordinator with Guardians of Honor, leading NASA-aligned STEM initiatives that reach students nationwide. Markowitz grew up attending camp, which had a transformative impact on her life, shaping her love for fostering independence and meaningful connections.
Originally from Austin, Texas, she enjoys reading, running, and spending time with friends and family.
“I’m honored to join the North Star Reach Board and contribute to a mission that brings so much joy and transformative experiences to children and families,” said Markowitz. “I’m eager to draw on my teaching background and passion for camp to strengthen the organization.”
As ex officio members, Markowitz will focus on bylaw review and enhancing governance processes, while Jarman will focus on fundraising events and sponsorship development.
“We are thrilled to welcome Alexis and Jaelynn to our Board through the Golub Capital Nonprofit Board Fellows Program,” said J.J. Lewis, chief executive officer. “Their perspectives and skills will help us continue moving forward in delivering life-changing camp experiences to children with serious health challenges. As we expand our board, we welcome more community members to get involved and make a difference.”
