Lovin’ the shades …

Well, I’m still whittling away at those 40 years of photos for my kids’ albums and I came across these adorable photos of Scott in his “Cool Dude” sunglasses enjoying a wonderful Fall day playing outdoors in 1973. Kids just love their first pair of sunglasses don’t they? They put those glasses on their face and suddenly they’re older and taller! Boy, what memories.

I enlarged the photos so they would be easier to work with and pulled the background paper from the Lost and Found collection by Tim Holtz and added in some scraps from Basic Grey’s Curio collection. I didn’t have many photos to work with for the page so really needed to play around with what to use for embellishing. As you know, I enjoy making my own embellishments, especially since I have all the tools to do it!

The decorative scallop border was created with a Martha Stewart border punch and the stars are cut using the die Stars, Primitive from Sizzix; I just love those stars – aren’t they cute? All the paper strips were distressed with one of my favorite tools from Tim Holtz – the Edge Distresser. A page from an old songbook was added just because I liked the song title. All the paper strips, stars and the song sheet were aged using Ranger Distress Inks in Vintage Photo, Walnut Stain and Black Soot. To add even more aging to the song sheet I painted on some Rock Candy Crackle Paint. It’s a clear crackle but reacts with the Vintage Photo Distress Ink so the ink actually soaks up into the cracks as the paint dries for a very cool effect.

Even after aging the stars with the inks they still looked a little plain so I pulled out my Tim Holtz trinket bin and decided to add the brads with a washer. I like the look; what do you think? The stars were then popped up on the page with black foam squares from Scrapbook Adhesives.

I mixed butterscotch, espresso and terra cotta Ranger Paint Dabber colors together to get just the right color for the title. I love these paints. They’re opaque and so easy to mix to create the right color for my projects every time and they cover random chipboard letters so well! They still looked a little plain when dry so I coated them with Rock Candy Stickles, and … it still wasn’t enough for me. So, I edged them with Perfect Medium embossing ink and dipped them in Black Soot Distress Embossing Powder. I am quite happy with the results but decided to add a little something more by wrapping a pieced of twine around the letter ‘d.’ My journaling was done in Word using Mom’s Typewriter font. I use this font a  lot – it’s a free one I downloaded from the Net.

And, if you look closely you’ll see a little strip of Kodak film in the lower right-hand corner that is attached with the Tiny Attacher. The filmstrip was a gift from a student recently and I absolutely love it!
