This is an open letter to our U.S. Senators and Representatives in Congress:
Friday was VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, when Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy capitulated to the Allied Powers. This left the Baltic States of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia — as well as most of Eastern Europe, including Ukraine —under a brutal and inhumane Soviet Russian occupation. My grandparents escaped that occupation just weeks before the war ended. Many of their siblings, nephews and nieces were deported to Siberia, some of whom perished there. I have second cousins born in Siberian prison camps. My grandparents and parents (as children) came to the United States of America as documented war refugees.
A few months beforehand, the U.S. Army published a brochure called, “Army Talk: Orientation Fact Sheet #64-Fascism.” It includes the following tidbits about fascism:
• Pitting of religious, racial, and economic groups against one another in order to break down national unity is a device of the “divide and conquer” technique.
• Interwoven with the “master race” theory of fascism is a well-planned “hate campaign” against minority races, religions, and other groups.
• Fascism cannot tolerate such religious and ethical concepts as the “brotherhood of man.” Fascists deny the need for international cooperation.
• In place of international cooperation, the fascists seek to substitute a perverted sort of ultra-nationalism which tells their people that they are the only ones in the world who count. With this goes hatred and suspicion toward the people of all other nations.
The Republican Administration is undertaking all these fascist practices.
