Howell City Council voting whether to restrict fireworks at next meeting, looking for feedback

How the fireworks make me feel.

The peace and quiet of life in Michigan has been shattered since Gov. Rick Snyder in January signed a bill that made legal the sale and use of larger fireworks — like bottle rockets and M-80s.

In response, communities across the state are adopting ordinances that restrict the use of the higher-ordnance explosives. You can read about the recent ordinances adopted in Grand Rapids and Kentwood by clicking here.

The Howell City Council on Monday introduced an ordinance similar to the ones passed elsewhere that prohibits the use of fireworks except for federal holidays and the day before and after. That’s a total of 30 days a year.

If you want to take a look at the proposed ordinance, click here.

The ordinance will be voted on at the next council meeting. While council members were sympathetic to those complaining about all the noise, they are looking for feedback from city residents before taking action on the ordinance.

If you live in the city of Howell, you should make your voice heard, no matter your opinion. To make it super-easy for you, you can fill out this online form and The Livingston Post will forward your comments to city hall before the next meeting.

Me?

I pray the council adopts the ordinance to limit the days fireworks are legal. While it’s been a daily annoyance for me, especially when the M-80s rattle the windows of my old bungalow, it’s been terrifying for my dog.

In fact, an M-80 just boomed, sending my dog into orbit.

Over the past couple weeks I’ve gotten my squeak on, ranting against the fireworks here, here and here; I’ve been in contact with Howell Mayor Phillip Campbell and Howell City Manager Shea Charles; I also started an online petition that you can sign by clicking here.

The members of the council are looking for any and all feedback, so fill out the form above (and include your name and address) if you’d like to make your opinion known.

On an ironic note, as I left the council meeting just before 9 p.m., I was met with the sound of bottle rockets from one of the nearby neighborhoods.
