The Livingston County Democratic Party thinks the local GOP reps in Lansing are very extreme, and it’s putting its money where its opinion is. The local Dems have launched the first salvo of the 2022 election season in the form of a video they’ve aimed at independents and moderate Republicans who might still think the current GOP is the party of George W. Bush.
“It’s not,” said Judy Daubenmeier, chair of the Livingston County Democrats.
“We wanted to drive home the point that there’s no difference between local Republicans and the most toxic leaders of their party in Lansing and Washington. They are cut from exactly the same cloth and depend on the same sort of toxic populism,” Daubenmeier said. “Lana Theis, Ann Bollin, and Bob Bezotte may not say the same things that Mike Shirkey and Ron Weisner do, but they never disavow them, either. They stand right there, shoulder to shoulder with them.
“In Lansing, they introduce bills to gut the right to vote absentee, and at home they issue press releases about March is Reading Month,” she said. “It’s time to rip the mask off the face of fascism in our county.”
Volunteers wrote the script and produced the video; the local Democrat party paid a small amount for a professional voice and music rights.
While this video concentrates on Shirkey, it also lands just days after news ricocheted across state and national media outlets that Ron Weiser, chair of the Michigan Republican Party, was captured on video calling Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson “those three witches.”
In that video, Weiser says: “Our job now is to soften up those three witches and make sure we have good candidates to run against them, that they are ready for the burning at the stake.”
Weiser — when questioned about supporting candidates to run against Michigan Reps. Fred Upton and Peter Meijer, both of whom voted to impeach former President Trump on a charge of inciting an insurrection — said that “other than assassination, I have no other way than voting them out.”
