By Congressman Tom Barrett
Serving as your congressman for Michigan’s 7th District is the honor of my life. As I take on this responsibility, I want to express my sincere gratitude for the trust you’ve placed in me to be your voice. I am committed to fighting for our shared values and delivering real results for mid-Michigan.
Mid-Michigan is my home. It’s where my wife Ashley and I are raising our four children, and it’s where I’ve spent my career in service — first in the Army, then in the state legislature, and now in Congress. I know the values that define our communities: hard work, personal responsibility, faith, and an unwavering commitment to family and country. These principles will guide me every day as I fight for you in Washington.
The challenges ahead are significant. Families across our district are struggling with the rising cost of living, the burden of high taxes, and an economy that too often feels stacked against working people. Our farmers, manufacturers, and small business owners — the backbone of our economy — deserve an advocate who will push for policies that support growth and opportunity.
That’s why I have opened my district office at 328 West Ottawa St., Suite A. in Lansing. My team and I are here to serve you—whether you need help navigating federal agencies, have concerns to share, or want to make sure your voice is heard in Washington. You can reach us at (517) 993-0510, and I encourage you to stop by or call whenever you need assistance.
As your member of Congress, my focus will be clear. I will:
• Fight for economic prosperity. We need policies that ease inflation, lower taxes, and help job creators thrive. I will advocate for common-sense solutions that put more money in your pockets and strengthen Michigan’s economy.
• Secure our border and protect communities. Washington has failed to address our border crisis, and it’s time for real action. I will fight for strong policies to secure our borders, uphold the rule of law, and keep our neighborhoods safe.
• Stand up for veterans and military families: I served 22 years in the Army and understand the sacrifices made by those who put on the uniform. As a proud member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I will work hard every day to ensure our veterans receive the care and benefits they have earned.
• Invest in infrastructure and agriculture: From fixing our roads and bridges to ensuring Michigan’s farmers have the resources they need to help feed the world, I will fight for policies that make our communities stronger and more competitive.
Above all, I will always put YOU first. Government should work for you—not the other way around. My office will always be open to hear your concerns, and I encourage you to reach out so that I can be the best representative possible for our district.
I am ready to get to work. Together, we can build a stronger future for mid-Michigan and our great country. Thank you for this incredible opportunity to serve you.
God bless you, and God bless the United States of America.
Congressman Tom Barrett represents Michigan’s 7th District, which includes all of Livingston, Ingham, Clinton and Shiawassee counties, the state capital of Lansing, as well as a majority of Eaton County and small portions of Oakland and Genesee counties.

Tom – While I appreciate your laudable service in our military, I question whether you are doing all that you can to stand up for our veterans and our national security. I appreciate that you wrote a letter asking the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to reconsider the DOGE cuts. But you need to do more. Article 1 of the Constitution grants the power of the purse to congress and not the president. What good will it do if you vote to continue funding the government if the president refuses to spend the money that congress allocates? And what purpose does it serve to vote for a tax cut that only benefits the ultra wealthy and increases our national debt by trillions of dollars? You are my representative. Stop acting like Trump’s pawn.
You certainly are not MY voice in Washington, and based on the feedback from others, it seems you might be talking to yourself. Have you been paying attention these past few weeks? Your supposed ‘focus points’ are completely out of touch with reality—so much so that they read more like a joke than a serious policy stance.
I am concerned as a licensed clinical social worker that critical and essential safety-net policies and programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security and programs for Veterans and farmer are in serious jeopardy due to the proposed major budget cuts and diluted protection for the citizens of Michigan and the United States. These programs serve over 83 million Americans. These services and financial assistance provided support millions of vulnerable people. These are my people and your people. They including communities of color, low-income people, senior citizens and others who are needing assistance and life sustaining health care.
As an advocate for vulnerable and marginalized populations, I , along with many in the human services and organizations, have urged you and congress and current administration to slow down and consider the lives who net the social safety nets to survive and keep them functioning. If left unchallenged, the planned huge cuts to Medicaid, veteran programs, and Medicare will leave a gaping hole in the safety nets that are life sustaining.
I would like to speak with you regarding my concerns. I have tried to call your office with no one answering the telephones. You do not have town halls. Please stop and consider all of your constituents Congressman Barrett.
Well said!
I’ve called that office. No one answers. You refuse to hold town halls. You claim to put us first, but I fail to see evidence of that. You sit silent while DOGE guts the VA and USAID. Michigan farmers have contracts with USAID- all canceled . Where were you then? You voted for the CR that demolishes Medicaid and SNAP- but then, poor people aren’t “job creators” so I guess you don’t see them as people, much less worthy of your support. You supported the SAVE Act, which would strip away my right to vote, because I changed my name when I married. Accountable to the people? Please. You are a coward beholden to your financial overlords who hides in his office and refuses to answer the phone.
