The local Republican Party’s recent news release, which claimed the Livingston County Democratic Party is “associated” with the Livingston Diversity Council, is focusing on a phony scandal and ignoring the real one, according to Judy Daubenmier, chair of the Livingston County Democratic Party.
“It isn’t a scandal that the Livingston County Democratic Party is a member of the Diversity Council,” Daubenmier said in a news release. “The real scandal is that the local GOP isn’t a member.”
This comes as a political tussle has erupted over the Howell Area Parks and Recreation Authority and its booking of a Drag Queen Bingo event during the Howell Melon Festival. You can read all about it by clicking here.
“Why isn’t the GOP a member (of the Livingston Diversity Council)? Spell it out for us,” Daubenmier said in the release. “When you rail against diversity, equity, and inclusion, exactly which groups do you want to exclude from our community? Stop beating around the bush and say what you mean out loud.”
Livingston County Democrats pay dues to be a business member of the Livingston Diversity Council, along with businesses such as St. Joe’s Hospital, Cleary University, First National Bank, and Lake Trust Credit Union.
“The GOP could have accused the Diversity Council of being ‘associated’ with any one of those community institutions, but chose not to mention their participation in the council. Again, why?” Daubenmier said. “Is it because it’s easier to divide people for political gain if you mention Democrats rather than the local hospital, university, and banks? Is it easier to make ‘diversity’ sound scary if you don’t mention that even banks and hospitals are for it?”
